On Saturday, Oct. 1, Growlers Beer Bistro held its grand opening ceremony, formally celebrating its home in the Village of Tuckahoe. Elected officials from the village and Town of Eastchester as well as members of the Eastchester-Tuckahoe Chamber of Commerce joined the proprietors in celebrating their new business, which opened at 25 Main St. last month.Growlers, which bills itself as a departure from the typical bar or restaurant, offers a rotating selection of 17 craft beers at any given time. Beer is available by the glass or in larger sealed containers – called ‘growlers’ – for transport home. Its food menu ranges from the standard hamburger to charcuterie – meat samplers – and cheese plates. “It’s kind of my spin on comfort food,” said Ciaran Cullen, 42, one of the owners, “some traditional, some not traditional.”The building at 25 Main St. was once an electrical substation for the MTA until it was decommissioned in the 1960s. For years, it sat abandoned until a renovation project began two years ago to restore the building as a commercial space. Growlers is the first business to move into the newly renovated building, owned by Main Street Depot, LLC. Tuckahoe Mayor Steven Ecklond (R) said he was pleased at the bistro’s arrival on Main Street. “[I’m] very, very happy that this building has a wonderful anchor tenant in Growlers,” he said. The grand opening Saturday attracted a strong crowd, including some locals who had already grown attached to the beer bistro. “Growlers opened during a difficult time in my life,” said Matthew Kachur, 51, one of the attendees, “and the welcoming staff and immediate friendship helped get me through a difficult period.”-Reporting by CHARLIE JOHNSON
